Difference Between No Maryland Car Insurance and Not Having Proof

If you have a valid policy in place – Then simply not presenting proof of insurance is a payable fine.

Most auto insurance policies renew every 6 months. Sometimes we forget to print out a new copy of our car insurance ID card. If you get stopped, and you don’t have a copy of your insurance ID card, but you have a valid policy, you could simply receive a Maryland payable ticket

Can I just pull up my car insurance policy on my phone and show it to the officer?

The short answer is probably yes! However, the police officer cannot be expected to stand there all afternoon waiting for you. If you are fumbling with trying to retrieve a lost or forgotten password, he may write you a ticket and go on his way.

So, if it’s just a matter of not being able to show proof – it’s a payable fine. But, what if I don’t have a valid policy?

Not having a valid policy will most likely result in a serious violation. This will not be a ticket that you can simply pay. You will have to appear in court. The penalty for driving without insurance includes fines, probation, points on your license and possible jail time.

So, if I don’t have valid insurance, will I go to jail?

Not necessarily. The penalty in Maryland is up to a year in jail. But, a skilled lawyer may be able to help you avoid jail time.

What if my insurance just expired recently. Is there a grace period?

No. In Maryland, your vehicle policy would have to be valid on the day of the stop.
