Is this a serious charge?
It carries jail time. Anytime your liberty is at risk, it’s considered a serious charge.
What would be my first step in resolving this?
You’ll probably want to get a valid license.
What if my license was just expired?
The penalty may be less severe if your license has been expired for less than one year.
What if I can’t get a valid license due to MVA holds?
You’ll need to address each of the holds and try to get them lifted.
What if I can’t pass the written part of the test?
There are classes you can take that will help you pass the written portion of the MVA driver’s test.
I’ve had several prior tickets for driving suspended. Will that make a difference in the outcome?
Unfortunately, yes. Depending on the number of priors, and the particular court, you may very well be facing some jail time.
Is this something I can just handle myself or do I need a lawyer?
If you show up to court without a lawyer, the prosecutor will most likely ask you if you’d like to postpone to hire counsel. If you tell the prosecutor you want to just settle it on your own, the prosecutor may very well accommodate you. However, you may not like the accommodation. You’ll probably get a take it or leave it offer that may not be in your best interest.
